A factorial experiment was conducted in a completely randomized design in 2024 with the aim of studying the effect of Sargassum seaweed extract on flower production, photosynthetic pigments, nutrient uptake and enzymatic activity of Echinacea angustifolia L. under salt stress. The factors studied were salinity concentration at four levels (zero (control), 50, 75 and 100 mM) and Sargassum seaweed extract at three levels (control (0), application of 1 and 2 g L-1). The highest number of flowers per plant (3.67) was obtained in the non-salt stress treatment with the application of 2 g/L of Sargassum seaweed extract. Salt stress reduced the amount of leaf potassium, such that the lowest amount of leaf potassium (1.40 mg/g dry weight) was related to the severe salt stress treatment (100 mM NaCl) without the application of Sargassum seaweed extract. Anthocyanin in Echinacea petals also decreased under the influence of salt stress, but the use of Sargassum algae extract increased its amount (0.41 mg g-1). The highest levels of catalase (0.45 enzyme units mg protein-1) and superoxide dismutase in Echinacea leaves (6.07 enzyme units mg protein-1) were also observed in the severe salt stress treatment. The overall results of the study showed that Echinacea was not very resistant to salt stress and the reduction in yield was quite evident. Although seaweed extract led to the moderation of the effects of salt stress in Echinacea, the concentration of 2 g L-1 of algae extract played a greater role in moderating the severity of salt stress.
